Introduction

India’s premier environmental research body, the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), has launched improved green crackers for Diwali 2025 that promise up to 50% lower emissions. This innovation coincides with the Supreme Court’s decision allowing limited use of NEERI-approved green crackers in Delhi-NCR, balancing festive joy with environmental protection.

Enhanced Combustion Technology

The latest formulations utilize advanced combustion techniques, raising burning temperatures from 650°C to over 1,000°C. This increase improves chemical efficiency, leading to fewer pollutants and rapid particulate settlement. Incorporating zeolites and polymer-based additives further enhances combustion and traps dust particles before dispersion.

Three Green Cracker Categories

NEERI’s technology classifies green crackers into three eco-safe categories:

  • SWAS (Safe Water Releaser): Releases water vapor to suppress dust and lower emissions.
  • STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker): Incorporates modified thermite compositions for clean burning.
  • SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium): Replaces high-energy metals like magnesium, cutting metallic emissions by over 30% without compromising vibrancy.

All variants eliminate toxic elements like barium nitrate and arsenic, using smaller shells and reduced explosives, ensuring safer celebrations.

Supreme Court Approval and Guidelines

In a landmark order dated October 15, 2025, the Supreme Court permitted the sale of NEERI-certified crackers bearing a visible CSIR-NEERI logo and verified QR code. These may be sold through licensed vendors across Delhi-NCR from October 18–21, with permitted bursting hours: 6–7 AM and 8–10 PM.

This move ends a long-standing blanket ban, opening a regulated path for eco-compliant festive fireworks. The decision aims to curb black markets while supporting formal green-cracker industries.

Market Impact and Outlook

More than 1,400 manufacturers nationwide have registered with NEERI to produce approved green crackers, especially in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. Industry turnover is estimated at ₹1,800–2,000 crore, growing by nearly 20% annually. Experts project that achieving commercial-grade 50% emission reduction is realistic within two years, making eco-friendly Diwali celebrations widely practical.
